Brian Davies will be publishing a new book on Mumbles & Gower Pubs, and the book launch will be held at Newton Village Hall on Saturday 4th August, from 11.30 am. Beer and wine will be available. Entertainment will be provided by the African drummer group, Shiko.
The book is a substantial update on his previous book on the topic, published in 2006. “In pictures and stories, this well-researched book relates the history of the area’s pubs, from back street locals to smart hotels”.

As denizens of the Swansea area know, Mumbles and Gower have a rich folklore, that is reflected in the everyday oral traditions, told in public houses across the area. The names of many pubs themselves reflect traditions from ancient times. The Mermaid and Antelope reflect mythical creatures, the Pilot and Blue Anchor reflect the maritime traditions, The King Arthur reflects the Arthurian legend, and many more hint at the agrarian activities and traditions of Gower. In more recent times, the Mumbles Mile entertained the hearts and minds of many a reveller. And of course, individual stories about characters, such as Edgar Evans, a member of Captain Scott’s polar party, are also recounted.
Brian, a regular in the Mumbles Ale House, has written many books across a wide range of topics. The book is surely to be well written and an interesting addition to those who have an interest in the history of the area. The book is published by Amberley Publishing, a specialist and local history publishing house. More details at Mumbles and Gower Pubs.
