Festival beer list and tasting notes 2017

This year for Swansea Camra’s annual Beer & Cider Festival we have gone out of our way to source a record range of the best new brews from all over the UK – many never before seen in this area.

All 122 beers are listed below with their tasting notes and a plan of the bar layout in the Brangwyn Hall, so you can plan your campaign!

Please note, beers are subject to alteration at the last minute. Beers are also subject to availability – and when they’re gone, they’re gone!

Brewed with a small amount of Caramalt and plenty of Australian Galaxy and Vic Secret hops. It has tropical fruit flavours with a long bitter finish.

BLACK JACK, Manchester, England

Black Maria   (V)   5.8%      B
A Columbus hopped Black IPA. Hoppy aroma, light body with stout colour and tasty roasty malt flavour, made with lots of lovely US hops.

New Deck   (V)    4.2%     G
A traditional golden bitter, hopped with a combination of UK and US hops.

BLUE MONKEY, Giltbrook, Notts, England

Ape Ale   5.4%     PA
Strong, pale ale with American hops to give aromas of resinous pine and citrus. 3.5lbs of whole hops for each barrel, to guarantee intense flavour and aromas.

Funky Gibbon     4.1%     B
A traditional light-copper coloured session ale infused with Willamette hops from the USA to create a fruity, earthy beer which perfectly balances malt and hops.

Guerrilla     4.9%    PS
A hearty pitch-black beer full of malty complexity balanced by a robust bitter bite.

Classic pale amber bitter, with a light malt base and a spicy fruitiness from the Challenger, Bramling Cross and Chinook hops.

Made from the juiciest hops with real fruit and purees so that tropical passion fruit, mango and pineapple flavours explode in your mouth.

Single-hopped with UK Phoenix, accentuated with a coffee blend exclusive to Brains, gives a rich, dark and smooth Porter with flavours of caramel, toffee and coffee.

Amber best bitter with toffee malt flavours from Maris Otter, balanced by traditional English Fuggles hops which gives a smooth bitterness and aroma.

As dark as the name suggests, this strong dark ale has a gorgeous liquorice and spicy character.

DANCING DUCK, Derby, England

Abduction    5.5%    PA
A myriad of tropical fruit flavours in harmonious balance with an enjoyable level of hoppy bitterness, a good malt character and a very clean finish.

Dark Drake   4.5%     PS
Delicious malty, caramel and liquorice flavours combine in a velvety, oatmeal stout with a freshly roasted coffee and toffee finish.

Wot the Duck? Ginger Ninja       4.1%      S
Citrus notes and a subtle ginger flavour that creeps up on you like a Ninja!

Munich style lager that is floral on the nose, but has a caramel/nutty taste alongside a smooth lemon finish.

CHURCH END, Nuneaton, England

Goat’s Milk    3.8%    G
Newly crowned 2017 Supreme Champion Beer of Britain. Pale barley, crystal malt and oats blend to fill the palate with flavour. Gentle hop finish.

SIBA Award Winner – Crisp pale brew with Chinook and Eldorado hops producing undertones of citrus, pear and melon.

GOWER, Crofty, Swansea, Wales

Thirst quenching golden ale, refreshing citrus flavours and the lovely aroma of Cascade hops.

Horizon        4.8%       S
Brewed with both rye and crystal malts, this beer has all the spicy, nutty flavours associated with this speciality grain.

Lighthouse    4.5%      S
A light, thirst quenching continental style lager packed with flavour.

Power         5.5%       PA
Traditional IPA with a full hoppy flavour. A smell of hedgerow fruits and a rich, malty and sweet taste.

Rumour       5.0%       SB
A strong ruby red ale, with complex tastes and aromas, produced from a delicate mix of malts and hops.

Sunrise      4.0%     PA
Brewed with pale malt and infused with a combination of two citrusy hops – Cascade and Citra. Giving a pineapple and citrus taste with a smell of fresh lemon fruit.

Supergold        7.0%     G
A mellow, easy drinking, limited edition gold beer — deceptively strong!

GREY TREES, Aberdare, Wales

Afghan Pale Ale       5.4%      PA
Cascade, Citra and Simcoe hops. Maris Otter malt provides a light colour and dryness to complement the crisp taste and full aroma of the hops.

Caradogs      3.9%      B
Copper in colour, with a crisp flavour and a dry finish. Crafted with Crystal and Caragold malt and Challenger and Golding hops.

Diggers Gold     4.0%      G
A CAMRA award-winning golden ale. Alive with fresh citrus aromas which leave a subtle bitterness. Marris Otter Pale Malt, with US hops.

MUMBLES, Mumbles, Swansea, Wales

Gold     4.3%      G
A light, refreshing, well hopped golden beer, the distinct and bold Styrian Goldings lemon & lime flavours, linger well.

India Pale Ale       5.3%      PA
A traditional India Pale Ale, light gold in colour and made using only Goldings and Fuggles hops, the latter giving a subtle but distinct taste and aroma.

Malt Bitter      4.1%     B
A traditional bronze coloured bitter that highlights the use of its malt mixture for flavour. Low in ABV, it is a good session beer.

Weisse      5.8%      S
A classic German style Wheat Beer made with German malts and hops. This naturally cloudy beer has spicy overtones and is full of banana and apricot flavours.

A light refreshing beer with pungent grapefruit, lychee and gooseberry aromas leading to a dry, bitter finish.

A delicious golden-brown ale with the rich spicy taste of Dartmoor heather honey and a hint of apricots.

DOWNTON, Salisbury, England

Chocolate Orange Delight      5.8%      BW
Pronounced chocolate flavours and a pleasant orange addition.

ELECTRIC BEAR, Bath, England

Inspector Remorse (V)     4.7%      PS
A classic London style Porter, smooth, dark and beautiful.

ELLAND, West Yorkshire, England

Beyond the Pale      4.2%      PA
CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain finalist for the last two years. Pale golden bitter brewed with finest English and German style malts for a rich flavour.

ENVILLE, Stourbridge, West Midlands, England

Ginger       4.6%      S
Produced using root extract ginger, this has a flavour that is not overpowering and is very refreshing.

EVERARDS, Narborough, Leicestershire, England.

Tiger       4.2%      B
Chestnut brown in colour; spicy hop aromas with toffee undertones.

EXMOOR, Wiveliscombe, Taunton, Somerset, England.

The first modern Golden Ale. A single-malt beer, with a fresh bouquet of grassy and floral hops giving a bittersweet finish with hints of citrus fruit.

FULLERS, Chiswick, London, England

ESB     5.5%      SB
Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops give grassy, peppery notes and intense citrus fruit. Pale Ale and Crystal malts for a biscuity, toffee element.

GLOUCESTER BREWERY, Gloucester, England

Dockside Dark (V)       5.2%      PS
Silky rich ale, warm and chocolaty with a subtle sweetness and a dry, roasted finish

Gold        3.9%      G
Crisp, fruity bitter golden ale with a luscious tropical fruit aroma.

GREAT HECK, North Yorkshire, England

Christopher   4.5%      G
A clean, golden ale with moderate bitterness and packs a hoppy, resinous punch of flavour and aroma from lashings of American Columbus hops.

Voodoo Mild      4.3%      M
Very flavourful dark mild brewed with lots of roasted malts, balanced perfectly with finest English hops.

Snowdon Lager     4.7%       S
Refreshing citrus hopped lager.

HAFOD, Mold, Wales

Hammer        6.6%       SB
A sweet, strong bitter full of tropical fruits in aroma and taste, balanced by a powerful hoppy finish.

HARBWR TENBY, Tenby, Wales

Caldey Lollipop      4.5%       PA
Hoppy American-style IPA with hints of pine and grapefruit. Maris Otter hops and Cara Gold malts creates its golden copper colour with a generous blend of German Magnum, American Mount Hood and New Zealand Wimea hops.

HEAVY INDUSTRY, Henllan, Denbighshire, Wales

Diawl Bach      3.8%    B
The blend of Amarillo, Cascade, Citra and Columbus hops mean that this little devil punches way above his weight. Dry hopped whilst conditioning, it is a fruity hop bomb.

Nos Smoked Porter     4.5%      PS
This dark porter is brewed with beech-smoked malts from Bamburg, Germany and finest British pale malt. Wreaths of smoke mingle with coffee and roast notes.

Pigeon Toed Orange Peel     5.2%       S
Orange wheat beer from Bavarian hops.

HOP BACK, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England

Crop Circle    4.2%     PA
Delicately fruity, giving way to some dryness. The inclusion of flaked maize subtly hints at crisp corn flavours.

HOPCRAFT, Llantrisant, Wales

Das Deutsche Projekt – Mandarina Bavaria  4.5%       S
A hop base gives way to a slightly citrussy and zesty hop finish with some maltiness to provide balance and body.

Hopbunker IPA        5.5%      PA
A big malty body, with some rummy dark notes, and a combination of citrussy Cascade and juicy Columbus hops to give a solid balance and soft finish.

LITTLE CRITTERS, Sheffield, England

White Wolf        5.0%      PA
American extra pale ale, hopped with Cascade, Ahtanum and Columbus. Refreshing, smooth with a crisp citrus finish.

Josephine Butler     (V)    4.5%      S
An elderflower ale with an initial citrus taste followed by floral notes lent by organic elderflower.

MONTYS, Montgomery, Powys, Wales

Mischief        5.0%         PA
Brewed with a balance of malts and hops this beer is an easy drinking brew with a slight sweetness in the finish.

Old Jailhouse      3.9%       B
An easy drinking rich amber coloured best bitter; full of malty character. Camra bronze champion beer of Wales 2016.

MOOR, Bristol, England

Old Freddie Walker  (V)       7.5%       BW
A rich dark, full-bodied old ale like liquid Christmas Pudding. With hints of chocolate, honey, dark roasts and liquorice.

Radiance        (V)        5.0%      G
Blonde ale with German Brewers Gold hops. If the Germans made IPA it might be a little like this.

NEATH, Neath, Wales

Deliverance        4.5%       B
Amber colour. Quite fruity, with a sprinkling of herbal hop.

9 LIVES, Ystradgynlais, Wales

Special    5.0%       SB
A premium chestnut coloured bitter with fruity aroma. Full bodied with balanced hop bitterness.

NORTHERN MONK, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England

Northern Star (Mocha Porter)      5.9%      PS
Ground coffee beans are blended into the brew, providing a roast bitterness and dulcet hints of hazelnut. Dark chocolate is added in for a rounded richness.

OAKHAM, Peterborough, England

Scarlet Macaw    4.4%       PA
Gooseberries and fruit to taste before an intense bitterness as sharp as a Macaw’s screech.

OTLEY, Treforest, South Wales

Thai-Bo    4.6%     S
Speciality brew originally brewed in colaboration with beer writer Melissa Cole. Infused with all things Thai.

PILOT, Mumbles, Swansea, Wales

Light     4.5%      S
Bohemian Pilsner malts with Czech Saaz hops and American ale yeast produce this “bastard” lager. Brewed as a lager, fermented as an ale.

PIPES, Cardiff, Wales

Bavarian Wheat (V)     5.3%       S
A Southern German style wheat beer. Brimming with tutti-frutti bananas and cloves. Naturally cloudy, deceptively strong and zippy.

Smoked Lager (V)    5.4%       S
This smoked lager is produced using Raubchbier (smoked beer) principles from Bamberg, Germany. The crispness of a lager infused with smoked malt.

PURPLE MOOSE, Porthmadog, Gwynedd, Wales

Cwrw Madog  (Madog’s Ale)        3.7%      B
A crisp, malty, reddish coloured session bitter with a dry bitter finish. CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain: Joint Bronze in Bitters 2015.

RED CAT, Winchester, England

Mr M’s Porter      4.5%      PS
Using four traditional English roasted malts this is a complex beer, which gives aromas of chocolate, vanilla and soft Greek coffee.

Kairos     4.4%      PA
Citrus session IPA highly hopped and with an infusion of fresh lemon zest.

RED WILLOW, Macclesfield, Cheshire, England

Feckless    4.1%     B
A classic British bitter, rich toffee and malt balanced with the subtle flavours of Challenger, First Gold and Target hops.

RINGWOOD, Ringwood, Hampshire, England

Forty Niner       4.9%      G
Golden full-bodied malted beer with strong hop balance and a deep bittersweet finish. Light, fresh hop bouquet.

RUDGATE, Tockwith, Yorks, England

Ruby Mild       4.4%   M
Nutty rich ruby ale.

SADLERS BREWING Co, Stourbridge, West Midlands, England

Hop Bomb      4.6%    PA
American pale ale with amarillo and citra hops. A sweet malt base is lifted by powerful hop character.

SALOPIAN, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England

Darwin’s Origin    4.3%        B
A copper coloured beer that evolves with a pronounced hop character, which leads to a refined malt finish.

Lemon Dream      4.5%    G
A shimmering golden ale, brewed using organic lemons which adds subtle zesty aromas and a citrus filled fruity finish.

Shropshire Gold      3.8%       G
A light copper full flavoured bitter, with a floral aroma and a full hoppy flavour that is balanced by a crisp dry maltiness and a rich finish. Camra award winner.

SKINNERS, Truro, Cornwall, England

GTA (Ginger)       3.8%     S
A lovely hoppy golden ale, fused with Cornish honey, gives this session beer a round finish with a hint of ginger.

BAR 4     GRAVITY BEERS

SONNET 43 BREW HOUSE, Coxhoe, Co Durham, England

Abolition Amber Ale    3.8%     B
A full bodied coloured malt, with a slight sweetness as well as a warm amber hue. British hops provide an earthy aroma and mid-range bittering.

Bourbon Milk Stout       4.3%      PS
Oat bitter, yet chocolatey from cocoa nibs and chocolate malt, giving way to the smoky sweetness from ageing in bourbon liquor oak casks.

SWANNAY, Orkney, Scotland

Island Hopping     3.9%     G
Brewed in Orkney, Swannay use pale malt and lots of New Zealand hops to create this hoppy, but still sessionable low strength beer.

Old Norway       8.0%     BW
An Orcadian barley wine, golden in colour with loads of chewy American hops to balance out the sweet British malt.

TATTON, Knutsford, Cheshire, England

Black Forest    (V)     5.7%        BW
Very dark brown appearance. Nose is malt, fruit and faintly hoppy. Matured in cask for six months with sherry oak chips.

Gyle 666     (V)      12.0%        PS
Imperial Russian stout – a “beast”. Tremendously complex, with rich roast flavours melded by chocolate and dark sugars, hints of orange with a warming alcoholic tingle.

TENBY, Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales

Black Flag Porter      5.2%     PS
This characterful porter has notes of coffee and chocolate and just a touch of vanilla spiced rum.

TICKETY BREW, Stalybridge, Greater Manchester, England

Rose Wheat Beer        4.5%       S
Belgian Wit with a difference. Rose works perfectly with beer and the heady aroma of this wheat beer mixes with a spicy kick of fresh ginger.

Tickety Few Summer IPA       6.0%      PA
Absolutely packed full of all the popular tropical American hops, with real pineapple and mango to add to the tropical flavours.

TIMOTHY TAYLOR, Keighley, West Yorkshire, England

Boltmaker     4.0%    B
A well-balanced, genuine Yorkshire Bitter, with a full measure of maltiness and hoppy aroma. Supreme Champion Beer of Britain in 2014.

TITANIC, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, England

Chocolate & Vanilla Stout     4.5%    PS
A rich beer with a bitter edge. The sweetness comes from the addition of Chocolate and Madagascan vanilla.

VALE OF GLAMORGAN, Barry, Wales

Dark Matter        4.4%        PS
This champion blackcurrant porter is easy going, rich and smooth, with liquorice and chocolate notes from the complex dark roasted malt recipe.

WAEN, (Brewed at Hopcraft Brewery, Llantrisant), Wales

Lemon Drizzle     3.7%    PA
Lemony vanilla flavoured pale ale.

WANTSUM, St Nicholas At Wade, Kent, England

Imperium     4.0%   B
A deep amber best bitter with smooth biscuit malts and a hoppy nose. Brewed exclusively with locally grown Kent Bullion hops.

WEST BERKSHIRE BREWERY, Yattendon, Berkshire, England

Magg’s Magnificent Mild       3.8%      M
A traditional-style, deliciously dark mild. Full of roast malt flavours coupled with a smooth mouth feel and gentle sweetness.

WEST BY THREE, Winch Wen, Swansea, Wales

Session IPA     4.3%      PA
A summertime India pale ale made with the addition of oats to the malt. Unfined and unfiltered, with a bright fragrant citrus cloud.

Choc Vanilla Stout      5.0%     PS
This stout is infused with vanilla pods which complement the dark malts to create a smooth dark stout.

Space Hoppy     5.0%       PA
A pale golden ale with the hops imparting a citrus flavour to make this beer hugely refreshing.

SALTAIRE, Shipley, Yorkshire, England

Blackberry Cascade    4.8%      S
American style pale ale with the floral aromas and strong bitterness of Cascade and Centennial hops, infused with a hint of blackberries.

ST AUSTELL, St Austell, Cornwall, England

Proper Job        4.5%     PA
A powerfully hopped golden IPA with citrus grapefruit flavours brewed with a single malt from Maris Otter Pale barley.

Bishopswood Bitter    4.3%    B
A delicate aroma, balanced taste, with bitterness growing in the finish.

Original Wood      5.2%     SB
Full-bodied, with complex flavours with a firm bitter ending.

Three Cliffs Gold       4.7%    G
Golden beer, with a hoppy, fruity taste and thirst quenching bitterness.

Indian Summer    4.0%      PA
A zesty aroma over a dry biscuity finish for a sophisticated mugful of sunshine.

White Queen     4.2%     S
A white wheat beer, naturally cloudy and is spiced with coriander, Curacao orange peel, and cardamon – reputed to have aphrodisiac properties!

TENBY, Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales

Barefoot Blonde  4.6%        S
A pale ale with 30% pilsner malt before single hopping with Cascade, and infusing with Thai Lime leaves. Full of character yet light and easy drinking.

THORNBRIDGE, Bakewell, Derbyshire, England

Jaipur IPA   5.9      PA
A citrus dominated IPA, soft and smooth builds to a crescendo of hoppiness with honey. An enduring, bitter finish.

Brother Rabbit     4%       G
Lemon zest in colour with a clean, hoppy aroma. A resinous finish and some bitterness.

TINY REBEL, Rogerstone, Newport, Wales.

Cwtch        4.6%      B
Welsh Red Ale. Citrus and tropical fruit dominate the taste that is backed up with caramel malts which balance the moderate bitterness. 2017 CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain category award winner.

Full Nelson     4.8%     PA
The sweet, musty flavour of the Nelson Sauvin hop is similar to the Sauvignon grape – and both grow in the same region of New Zealand. Sweet Munich malt compliments the fruity hop flavours in this Maori-inspired pale ale.

Fubar       4.4%     PA
Classic American hops are used to give an edge to this dry, floral and spicy traditional British-style pale ale.

Hank     4.0%    G
With tropical and citrus aromas and a low-to-medium bitterness, this is one easy going West Coast-style beer. Floral flavours with slight caramel and biscuit notes make this well-balanced and highly drinkable.

Juicy       4.8%      G
Delicious golden ale, filled with the juiciest hops – offering nearly as many mouth-watering flavours as those countless sweetie jars stacked high above your head years ago.

Stay Puft       5.2%         PS
This porter has the classic roasty qualities of a proper dark ale, whilst the marshmallow gives it a smooth sweetness, both combining for a delightful, S’mores-like ale.

TOMOS WATKIN, Llansamlet, Swansea, Wales

Delilah           4.0%       PA
A light golden blonde ale produced with American hops, to give you a crisp and refreshing beer with zesty citrus flavours and a hint of spice.

Kick Ass IPA      6.0%        PA
A full bodied IPA, with a clean malty palate allowing new world hops to give a refreshing bitterness, tropical fruit flavours and a dry finish, with a wonderful citrus, peach aroma.

WYE VALLEY, Stoke Lacy, Herefordshire, England

Butty Bach   4.5%    G
Golden ale from Maris Otter and Crystal malts, flaked barley, malted wheat, and locally grown Fuggles, Goldings and Bramling Cross hops.
